Demolition | Polytoxic

The highly anticipated Demolition by Polytoxic was a unforgettable embodiment of what happens when you weave Fierce Femme Tradies showcasing breath-taking aerial rope, and captivating cabaret and theatre with food for thought as they take you through a journey of ups and downs reflecting daily experiences for those affected by patriarchy and the colony.

When arriving at my seat a wave of proud brown girl joy makes its way through my spirit as the demolition work site sets the scene for what is going to be one of the most memorable shows that I've witnessed. I was about to undergo a unravelling of identity and I was more than ready!

The stars of the show unite all those in attendance with moments of interacting with the crowd, through call and response which is a powerful reminder of solidarity and a call for action which first starts with ourselves and the community. As a Pasifika, Queer Non Binary Person this type of energy and inclusion for all minorities is impactful and refreshing, seeing yourself on stage commanding respect makes the message of the show even more encouraging to love your truth!

The sentiment of we can't be silenced echoes throughout every song, word and dance move which exposes these mostly swept under the rug experience's to those in the audience who maybe upholding these systems being confronted in the show. One of the most confronting parts is when the lights go out and a direct spotlight on such chilling issues such as rape culture is portrayed through raw emotion and vulnerability. It leaves you with many questions and feelings around how you can make your community safe for all which is a must in these times.

The electrifying and daredevil performance stunts are executed with such style and sexiness. In true Poly-toxic fashion the legacy of hyper visuals and high energy flows effortlessly and every trick is jaw dropping! The colours and sounds pair perfectly with the intense emotion of the atmosphere. Just the fix of adrenaline I need to take down the system!

Spearheaded by Powerhouse storytellers Lisa Fa'alafi & Leah Shelton, following their recent success Apocalipstick. Partnered with the sonic sounds of Kim Busty Beats Bowers, I am reminded of the divine essence that is femme fierceness and creation.

Jackhammer played by Ghenoa Gela who holds the leading spotlight with her inspiring stage presence and enchanting emotion. Most memorably through leading an unforgettable kick ass self defence class scene which makes me feel empowered to overcome any obstacle!

Danger Zone perfectly embodied by Wahine Lilikoi Kaos. From her fiery hula hooping to her stage and crowd control, she doesn't miss a beat.

Spine tingling vocals presented by Alinta McGrady who steals the show any chance she can. Her spellbinding movement on stage is hypnotizing and displays First Nations Mana! Particularly through the spoken word piece ‘Reclaim’ which focused on how we are continuing on the legacy of the ancestors and for future generations.

Zayah from The House of Alexander, turns heads all night with their enchanting aura and captivating magnetism of movement which was front stage in the heartfelt dance performances layered throughout the night.

Burning down walls of a system that was never built for us, and planting seeds for a new one to grow, it does a tremendous job of making space for the different intersections of the shared experience and highlighting the beauty and diversity even through moments of tear-jerking and triggering realness that added to the rawness of each sensational scene.

This loud and proud platform of power provokes within me feelings of empowerment and showcases the award winning talents of the collaborative team behind this momentous show!
