Not a Cult* leans into a certain Australian-ness. The cheerful insistence that she'll be right, the motivational slogans, the promise that if we all have a go we'll all get somewhere. Counterpilot takes these familiar cultural touchstones and turns them into something faintly sinister. Is our national identity just a collection of rituals we've agreed to repeat? When does community spirit become herd mentality?

The first forty-five minutes of the play was some of the most powerful theatre I’ve seen as Dow and Latrise were engaging in an tennis match of absurd proportions about their inner frustrations with themselves and each other, with Llewy-Allan providing comedic quips to add more bounce.
The Elephant in the Review
Shows like The Bigger Picture have value whether a white reviewer approves of it or not. As much as I enjoyed it, my review is ultimately an incomplete understanding of the work, because I will never have the lived experience that would allow that level of depth in analysis.
Looking back and looking forward: Reflecting on the Meanjin arts scene in 2022
2022 was a massive year for the live arts scene in Meanjin / Brisbane. Art had helped the city cope with so much during the pandemic, and as the city emerged from COVID bubbles and restrictions last year, the arts scene returned to their old stomping grounds and creatives launched new shows, new venues, new festivals and a whole lot of excellent art.
