By Request | Jenny Wynter

Jenny Wynter is an all-round entertainer and her show at the Queensland Cabaret Festival ‘By Request’ was a joy to experience. I had previously seen Jenny perform at Women In Voice. My expectations were high but she more than delivered.

The audience milled around on arrival at The Old Museum with an an atmosphere of expectation, as no one knew what to expect. We were given a sheet of paper on which we were asked to fill out certain categories; words of wisdom, last text on your phone, a place, an object and a skill you discovered during COVID. Just answering these questions was a fun activity. The sheets were then collected and placed in a fishbowl.

Jenny and her sister Angie, who did a fabulous job on the keyboard, arrived on stage with incredible presence. They were shining in their sequin outfits. With deft skill Jenny began creating a story that was unique to this evening, not heard before or since! She became Jean Sunbeam using names and places provided by the audience. She had a husband called Cameron and a stepson who was a mass murderer. She reached into the fishbowl often and built on the details of this new character. It was hilarious to see her reactions to some of the info provided. In our audience, it seems dildo’s were a popular choice!

It was relaxing to sit back and immerse yourself in the quirky, fantastical story she created. I was so impressed with how on the ball she was, never missing a beat. It was great to see people react to their content being brought to life.

Jenny and Angie Wynter made a great team. I assumed they had set rhythms of songs they were going to perform and then Jenny improvised the lyrics.  Her talent as a professional singer shone through, unbelievable that she could sing so beautifully and be constructing lyrics at the same time. I fully expected to see smoke coming out of her ears, that’s how fast her brain appeared to be working.

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening as did the audience which was evident by the laughing, cheering and clapping. What a delight it was to experience such a clever and entertaining show. Thank you Jenny for your talent and your humour.
